The white villages of Andalusia: pueblos blancos from the Costa del Sol
5 min read · 12 June 2026

Nothing breathes Andalusia quite like the pueblos blancos: whitewashed mountain villages with flower boxes on the walls, narrow cobbled streets and squares where time seems to stand still. From your villa, plenty lie within easy reach.
Mijas, the closest
About 25 minutes away is Mijas Pueblo, clinging to the mountainside with sweeping views over the coast. Wander the white streets, sip a coffee on the square and soak up the panorama. Mijas is more than the mountain village, though: its coastal side, La Cala de Mijas (± 20 min), is a lively seaside resort with a fine promenade and a market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
Further afield, well worth it
Drive a little further and you're rewarded: Casares with its castle ruins high on the hill, colourful Frigiliana near Nerja (often voted the prettiest village in Andalusia) and the curious Júzcar, once painted entirely blue.
Nature between the villages
The villages are set in beautiful nature. The Sierra de las Nieves national park, barely an hour away, offers walking routes among pine forests and peaks, wonderful in the mild winter season.
